Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. James Hamilton Peirce, Waterboro, Me., physician, was born on 3 Oct. 1803. He received an M.D. from the Medical School of Maine in 1825. He had several children, including physicians B. F. Peirce and James Peirce. James H. Peirce died on 2 Aug. 1878. Benjamin Franklin Peirce was born on 23 Feb. 1837.
